Al-Sharkia Governor Hazem Al-Ashmouni oversaw a practical test of the rainwater drainage system at the Orabi Tunnel in Zagazig City. The event was attended by Deputy Governor Lobna Abdel Aziz; Shaaban Abu Al-Fotouh, Head of Zagazig City and Center; Yousri Rashed, Head of Zagazig District 1; Mohamed Abu Hashem, Head of Zagazig District 2; and Engineer Khaled El-Demerdash, the Orabi Tunnel Project Manager.
Key aspects of the field simulation included:
▪ The Project Manager explained to the Governor and his accompanying delegation that the test involved pumping large quantities of water into the tunnel to simulate rainfall and flash floods. This was done to test the lift pumps, submersible pumps, drains, and drainage lines, ensuring efficient water extraction and disposal during adverse weather conditions.
▪ The Governor inspected the tunnel’s control room and reviewed operating systems and backup power generators designed for use during power outages. He also monitored the tunnel's pumping operations and tested the Civil Defense water line to verify its readiness for emergency use.
▪ The Governor stated that the governorate has developed a plan for the rainy season. This plan relies on coordination between executive bodies, the Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage Company, and other relevant agencies to ensure rapid intervention in the event of water accumulation or other consequences of volatile weather. He noted that work teams have been trained in situation assessment, crisis and disaster management, and urgent decision-making to ensure public safety and the smooth flow of traffic.
▪ The Governor of Sharqia affirmed that the results of the drill reflect the level of preparedness to handle emergency weather conditions. He emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of operational systems and emergency equipment to ensure a rapid response to rainwater accumulation, thereby safeguarding citizens and maintaining smooth traffic flow throughout the winter season.
It is worth noting that Orabi Tunnel serves as a vital traffic artery connecting the eastern and western sections of Zagazig City. It plays a key role in alleviating congestion and improving traffic flow—particularly during peak hours—while supporting the city's network of roads and main thoroughfares.
